Blenheim Gardens
When I took these pictures I was flat-hunting in the Brixton area and stumbled on this estate. Thankfully I had my camera with me, and although the flat I had just viewed wasn't quite right for me, this serendipitous architectural find made the trip to South London absolutely worthwhile.
Blenheim Gardens is a low-rise council estate in Brixton, South London. It was built between 1969 and 1974 and designed by Ted Hollamby.
The estate moves away from the high- and medium-rise approach of the time as it's based on terraces and courtyards. The design includes separate routes for cars and pedestrians, a landscaped central mall, flats above garaging, and shared community buildings.
The materials chosen, London stock brick and slate, set the estate apart from the heavy concrete of contemporary Brutalist estates, and give it a peculiar, distinctive character.
